Lux Leaks: Tricks of the Trade
With my first Pulitzer Center grant, I produced a video to help explain how some of the largest global companies save billions on their tax bills by hiding earnings in Luxembourg. The animation serves as an introduction to a major investigation by the Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
ICIJ collaborated with more than 80 reporters in 26 countries to analyze nearly 28,000 pages of leaked confidential documents that lay out the special tax deals granted by the government of Luxembourg to some of the world’s largest corporations. One of the main difficulties reporters faced was translating the complexity of the financial arrangements laid out in the leaked documents to language and examples that a broad audience could understand. The animation played an important role in making the story accessible; it was translated into seven languages and featured on the websites of ICIJ's media partners around the world, including French newspaper Le Monde.
